[Yum] yum updates and FC 6/7

Just want to confirm my understanding of a couple of points ...

I have an FC 6 instance where yum update no longer runs. I'm assuming that
this is because FC 6 is now de-supported.

My FC 7 instance is running as a web server and so is always on. It seems as
if I have to reboot the box to re-initiate the yum update cycle. Am I
missing something here?
