[Yum] yum breaks mysql

no, no mysqld process is/was running.

This has been quite a pain.  I've been googling this for 2 days, installed,
uninstalled, reinstalled, checked permissions and tried every suggestion I
could find...

I'm so frustrated I'm about to reinstall the system from scratch, I'll
likely fight with this for another day before that becomes the easier
option - I just have a lot on that server and it would take awhile to
rebuild.

this is the version:
mysql  Ver 11.18 Distrib 3.23.58, for redhat-linux-gnu (i386)

Yes - that might be it. Packagers of daemons should stop the service of
the old version before the new package is installed - even though rpm
has the facilities for that, often they don't.
