No, this is probably a legacy from some previous incarnation of my
systems, although I would have sworn that this was a red hat-ism from
some years ago (although I suppose it might have survived from a VERY
old version of Slackware). I remember it appearing in one of the linux
distro's because it was very odd and broke all sorts of stuff, but
instead of fighting it I just acquiesced and it probably became buried
in my /etc/files (I install my own /etc/files over whatever RH has
installed clean, since I don't use NIS at home).
Well then, as they say, "Never Mind"... I'll just fix /etc/group
everywhere. It will actually be a real pleasure to see ORroot go away
anyway.
