I agree about nothing cohesive. If time was ample and I wasn't doing other 
things I think I would do something like:

1. have a cron job which spits the list of things this machine needs to 
update via func to a 'update monitor' service

2. have that data be stored in a db and be accessible via a website.

3. be able to say on the 'update monitor' machine "tell the following 
systems (via func) to update themselves with the following updates + deps"


4. as always, profit...

Have you looked into func, yet?
