Sounds good to me. I see this as:

2.6.x  - Starting from what would be 2.5.3. Stable release series
          (mainly bugfixes)
2.7.x  - Development series, API cleanups and breakage that's
          been discussed.
3.0.x  - Stable release coming out of 2.7.x.

Where does 2.9 come from that you mentioned or was that just a 
hypothetical version number?
