[Yum-devel] lunch discussion

discussion over lunch with some good folks and a few ideas came out of
there:

1. yum generate-rss should be able to generate/list everything that yum
list can do - though maybe one per file so:
 yum generate-rss
  - no arguments means make an rss feed of the packages returned by:
     yum list recent

  - 'updates' generates an rss feed of the updates - then something like
rhn-applet can read that file to display the list of updates and
    changes for the user

2. an applet to view those easily from your gnome-panel.
3. yum makecache run in a nightly cron job. makecache downloads all the
xml files and generates the pickle caches of them.
4. something not inside yum - but maybe yum generate-rss updates pushes
a file out so it's accessible to a gatherer program that gathers and
concatenates the list of systems needing certain packages into a single
report for an admin of a number of machines
  - security implications of this are obviously needed to be assessed
but a private webserver run on a specific port just serving up a static
rss file might not be out of the question.

I welcome thoughts and code on all of these.

Thanks
