well I was using it mostly just as a way for a person reading the file
to see what it was talking about - the id would be the programmatic
mechanism for identifying a set of files with the package they belong
to. But then I thought - if we're going to use the space to store that
data, why not make it possible to parse it?

it's just an md5sum - I can't imagine why it would be difficult.
