Yes, at 64, I'm in no hurry to do other than as you wisely suggest;
meanwhile, last evening, I implemented Ubuntu 10.10 as my network
management station so I could wait a while and spend some quality time
learning how to fix the broken system.

The problem as I understand it with SL6 et al is that our rural server
room is full of single-purpose-built Compaq RAID-based machines
(cpqarray) and as I understand it, support is ending for those with the
sunset of 5 :(

Meanwhile, I wish for Ubuntu's "fix broken system" option.

YES, you are correct about that. I believe there's something lurking
beyond my current ability to get my head around the rpm database issues
involved in Karanbir's comments, namely:

"All that you should need to do is install centos-release, remove
redhat-release rpms and just yum update the machine, which should
bring in all packages changed by CentOS ( since they will have a
slightly higher E-V-R )."

Seth, Karanbir, et al have forgotten far more than I'll ever know about
such matters.

THANKS for your input. It is fully appreciated.

kind regards/ldv
