create a ~/.rpmmacros file with the contents:
%_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch}

This will show you the arch when you query rpm and yum.
For example:
[jperrin at insanity ~]$ rpm -q httpd
httpd-2.0.52-22.ent.centos4.i386
