[Yum] yum running multiple times at once

Is there anyway to parse the config file *only* for the pid file first,
then check for it's existence before doing the other stuff?

A dozen hung yum processes running on a server, one of which that
sometimes takes 100% of a CPU, is not a pretty thing.
