[Yum] I broke yum. Can't make it work again.

OK, this looks very familiar (python + socket.py + openssl).  Try
searching the net, and specifically this list (think google and site:)
for answers.  People have run into this problem before.  At this
point, though, it's clear that it's not a yum problem.  socket is an
extremely standard package and no application that uses will function
correctly.  It's probably a badly-built rpm of something (as you say).
