[Yum] updating with wild cards

the manpage for yum in the update section says:
"If no package matches the given package name(s), they are assumed to be a
shell glob and any matches are then installed."

well i tried:
yum update kde*

and it bombed out saying:
Cannot find any package matching kde* available to be updated.
No actions to take

am i misunderstanding something?  thanks for the help.
