[Yum] user/passwd in ftp url supported?

ummm ... yes. The upgrade worked.

Now I need to scratch my head a bit and figure out why the new popt
"conflicts" with the existing one when installed on its own, but
installs as part of a "batch" of rpms. 

All this sysadmin stuff is hard - I'll be happy to get back to being a
developer instead when this project is over :-)
