I've done them from 7.1->7.3 and now from 7.3->9 but major version
updates are given to packaging errors (someone forgets that name of foo
is now bar so bar needs to obsolete foo, etc)

So occasionally it takes some concerted effort to watch for which pkgs
have old legacy things that can block an upgrade.

oh and you should always use yum upgrade for a distro-version change.

obsoletes should be consulted in those cases.
