Summary:
 If yum fails on the diskspacecheck then it should purge all rpms in the
package cache that are not currently needed for the pending transaction.
If, after this, there is still insufficient space then laugh mirthlessly
at the user.

Rob, this is not a ludicrous request. I'm just trying to figure out
where it fits into the code.
