On a related topic, has anyone found a compelling paradigm for splitting
an install between a local filesystem and remote (NFS) server(s)?

Someday we will have union-mount & unionfs (*) and the relocate v.
symlink-farm headache can go away.  But the multiple-database /
dependency-mgmt hell remains.
