[Yum] yum produces ImportError

I installed yum 0.8.6 on Redhat 7.3. I originally install using
yum-0.8.6-1.noarch.rpm but tried reinstalling from the source with the
same results.

When I run yum, I get an error:

[root at localhost vulpine]# yum update
Traceback (innermost last):
  File "/usr/sbin/yum", line 22, in ?
    import yummain
  File "yummain.py", line 19, in ?
  File "clientStuff.py", line 21, in ?
ImportError: cannot import name conf

The same error shows up with any command, or even just 'yum' by itself on
the command line. Maybe I am doing something wrong, and I hope you can
enlighten me.

Cheers,
Kit
