Bummer!!  After posting this I realised what was happening and
implemented the yum groups API.  This is dynamically created based upon
the groups tags in the RPMs on the channel.  I guess I shouldn't have
been surprised, but the correlation between this and those in Fedora's
comps.xml is minimal ...

That would be a good idea.  This minimal RPM set should prove to be
small and static and could be managed via Requires in the mock spec -
maybe as a sub-package.  All that would be necessary would be to install
this mock subpackage in the chroot.

Sure.  BTW, I noticed that the one on fedora.org does not have rpm-build
in it's minimal package list - bit of a showstopper that ;)
