This is probably what's going on.

I don't know what a "sonic firewall" does (I googled it, but had
trouble wading though the marketing).  It may be mangling the
byterange requests.

That supports Greg's (and my) theory.  The yum that came with centos
3.x didn't rely on byteranges.
