In general, yes, don't take heroic measures to make this true (esp for
long outputted strings)

2.2 is what I'd like to shoot for, if at all possible.  I'm open to some
debate on this actually. 2.4-specific is right-out but 2.3 as a minimum
might not be a crazy idea.
